Becoming a First Time Homebuyer

It’s the American dream, right?

Buying your first home is supposed to give you this gold star that signifies “you’re officially an adult!”

If being an adult means eating dinner on TV trays while waiting months for your furniture to come in because everything is on backorder, then we can all take a second to laugh.

Honestly, that is all you can do at times. Laugh. Take it all in. Trust the process.

My experience buying a home might be different than others, but the stress of organizing all you have to do, while balancing work, is a similar process everyone goes through.

Trust your realtor. Don’t just do a google search and find one. Rely on your network of family and friends to find a good, trustworthy realtor. My realtor knew more about our personal life and finances than most people ever will. They make big decisions for you and it’s so important for you to feel good working with them.

Know what you want. This isn’t like going to the grocery store and aimlessly wandering the aisles to realize you needed extra granola. This is your future home. Narrow down your must haves vs nice to haves and make sure you stick to it. You’ll be so happy when you’re able to bike to the beach (must have for us).

Give yourself time. There are so many phone calls, paperwork, people to meet, places to go, that it can be very overwhelming to balance it at all during a workday. Although timing can’t be perfect, set yourself realistic expectations. Try not to start the process of buying a home during a busy time at work.

Trust your instincts. If it feels right, put an offer in. If you can’t picture yourself living there, keep looking. The best feeling of walking into your home is feeling the sense of home. If the house is right for you, then you’ll get that feeling from the minute you walk in. Trust yourself!

Do you see a trend here? Trust.

Don’t let the pressure around you feel like you have to buy. You don’t have to fit a mold, stay on the path to create the version of the life you want to live.

When it’s time, you’ll be living in your own home and feel truly good about it! Just wait until your first time hosting. You’ll learn how to make a stellar charcuterie board. Happy house hunting xoxo.
