How I Discovered My Creative Power

What comes next after you graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Studio Art? (Yes, I took drawing classes, woodworking, graphic design, you name it.).

I learned early on that my creative power wasn’t necessarily being the artist, it was working with them in their careers.

Focus on your power and let that guide you in your career. I took the knowledge I had in design and applied it to my daily tasks at work. It put me on my career path and led me to develop a strong relationship with creative teams.

Being creative is all about pushing the envelope and discovering something new. There are many things you do throughout your day that bring out your inner creativity without you even noticing it.

How to Get Creative at Home and at Work:

  • Shop in your closet for a statement outfit to wear to a work meeting

  • Try a new, local coffee shop with your friends and co-workers

  • Listen to an inspirational playlist or podcast

  • Cook a new recipe for dinner

Let’s chat quickly about channeling your inner creative at work- have you ever tried giving feedback to a creative team member? It’s really not easy for anyone, including myself.

These are my top 4 steps that I try to follow when providing any type of creative critique. (The details listed are an example of Adobe Creative Suite but these 4 steps can literally be used on any type of critique).

Although you might not label yourself “creative”, it ultimately comes down to showing that you care. It seems simple, but giving someone five extra minutes can go a long way.

Next time you are in a position to give a co-worker or friend your feedback on a creative project, take a deep breath and start with a compliment. Let the creative steps flow. That is when the real sunshine is created!

Surround yourself with creative & hard-working minds, you’ll be amazed how big of an impact you can make together!

Selling a vision with a lot of creative pieces involved can be tough for some people to understand. I learned that when you can take something that already exists in business, and apply a form of art to it, it’s much easier to get it done.

Next time you are in the ideation phase of planning an event, challenge your creativity and see if you can mix art into it.

Check out one of my visions of mixing work and pleasure come to life (with the help of an awesome creative team). It was a collaboration between Abstract Athlete and Twenty6North Productions. We hosted the first ever live art exhibit at an NHL game during Art Basel week in South Florida!

Get creative. It will push you outside your comfort zone and is easier to accomplish than you realize.

Next time at work, present your ideas visually instead of on an excel spreadsheet. Your co-workers will thank you. While at home, watch a video on how to cook a new recipe instead of staring at an old cookbook. Your tastebuds will thank you.

And lastly, the beautiful Florida Panther. My goal to get an art mural up downtown finally happened! Take your photo in front of this larger than life art mural if you’re ever in the South Florida area. Click here for directions.
